In 9 CE the Romas were defeated by the Germans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The Roman general Publius Quinctilius Varus lost 3 legions, roughly 13000 soldiers. It was a great victory for the Germans. In the 19th century, the prevalent thought was that this battle ended Roman expansion into northern Europe. What a marvellous victory. In the 19th century, this story was food for German nationalist who gobbled it up with hide and hair.

The German confedaration was a divided nation in the 19th century. Consisting of many different states.
